ANYTHING ELSE:
Zeus is a character whom is both powerful in his phsical presense and in vigor who demands respect and preeminence amongst his fellow Gods and mortals alike. A natural born leader it is apparent from a young age that he demands absalute obedience and cooperation swaying mostly to his favor yet he is fair and just to those who deserve it - often being recognized as 'too lenient' in his judgement of mortals but not of Gods. To face Zeus's wrath is a terrible thing as any fair one could tell you, going as far as to have one of the friendlier Titans,(Promentheus) who angered him by giving the fires of Olympians to mortals which allowed them to develop a intellect far beyond their purpose, an eternal suffering by having him chained to a mountain to have his liver eaten every night by his symbolic eagle. Which explains his apparent paranoia.
You see, in some ways Zeus is very much like his father before him. His paranoia stems from the fear that one day his faithful subjects would overthrow him relieving him of his throne and banishing him to Tartarus so alongside reigning with an iron fist he allows them certain leniencies which would not particularly affect him or perhaps could benifit him in the future such as having children with mortals which he is guilty of more than others. As in most tales around Zeus, every one of them depicts the sky lord as a bit of a philanthropist often disguising himself to persue his personal perversion, his weakness being beautiful young maidens which he persues with such ruthfulness that it quite often puts them and their offspring in danger. Despite his lustful nature he is very kind to his demi-god children even to the point of offering them position in his court or in the case of Thalia Grace, turning her into a tree to spare her his brother's wrath in the Underworld while he was still hurting over the death of Ms. Di Angelo. (Which of course, was Zeus's fault.)
Despite his 'just and caring nature' more often than not, his whimsical tendancies cause a lot of heartache (and headaches) amongst his commerades. He will often accuse his brothers of plotting against him and trusts very little, even his consort who is known for her bunny boiler tales. Poseidon especially, despite everyone thinking that Hades would be his natural enemy, is the most obvious object for his distrust due to his political influence amongst the Gods making Zeus rather ill tempered and short with him but is wise enough to consider his advice even if it is not what he is willing to hear. The relationship amongst the Big Three is competitive at best and destructive at worst, each at constant war with each other over trivial matters which has recently taken to a more 'my kid is better than yours' angle now that the secret is out. This has caused the big man to help out his children more than he would if the circumstances were different even though he was the one who imposed the 'hands off' approach to begin with.
His tendancies for the 'dramatic' is obvious in everything he does. Who else would waltz around with lightning licking at their togas or whipping up thunderstorms ou of nowhere? Just Zeus... because he can. That is the story of his life. Luckily few of his children developled this characteristic but it does make him unbeleivably excited when one of them demonstrates something the kids would dexcribe as awesome. Confidence in our abilities to the point of arrogance is the key to keeping those who would doubt in line! Even if it takes a random display of distruction he will toy with the skies and those dwelling within and boast about it afterwards in a very 'I bet you can't do that!' sort of way. Slef-centered might be another way to describe him but I really do think that point has come accross already, if not please expect it. He does not care that the passengers of that plane had families on earth, nor did he care that the little old lady he struck with lighting was just two days away from ther 100th birthday - mortals are disposable, if he had wanted them to be anything other than that he would have given them the fire himself! Ah, there it is - bitter.
What you wouldn't expect is his capibility for sympathy. This may contracdict what I said before with the old lady and the plane but it is possible, if it relates to him or any of the other Gods. An example would be when Percy pointed out that Ophiotaurus wanted to do the same thing that he did to Kronos, he was the first to reconsider his judgement even though he was the first to put him forward for execution. The Romans do not believe this side of him though, envisioning him as more powerful, warlike and much more ruthless than his greek counterpart. In the eys of the Romans, Jupiter is a force to be reckoned with and and definately to be respected, even more so than Rome's patron God Mars.

HISTORY:
As is well known, Zeus was born to a terrible fate like his brothers were born into. His father Cronus was the ruling Titan, cruel and without remorse he devoured his children to avoid the fate predicted by Gaia that he would have his thrown taken from him in the same fashion that he earned his - his child would rise up and end his tyrancy. Of course, not everyone was hapy with this arrangement, Rhea his wife and mother of these infants grew weary of her husbands tactics and was resentful that she could not raise the children that were growing steadily within his belly so she devised a plan that would have her last child saved. She approached Gaia for ideas and suggested that she feed her husband a stone in place of the child - after all, he was incapable of distinguishing between a living creature and an object. So at the time of Zeus's birth, she bore him in a cave crete and wrapped up a boulder instead leaving her newborn in the care of a Nymph named Melissa and returned to Olympus to present the stone to her husband with plans to return for the child to raise him in secret but alas Gaia had another agenda.
Once left at the mouth of the cave, the young God was within Gaia's reach and she planned to use him to fulfill the prophesy and to put an end to her son's rule - she was discontent at having been locked away for so long and saw Zeus as the key to her escape. After all, Gods were much weaker than the Titans and once Cronus was dealt with she and her other children would be free to rule once more and so it was, once Rhea had left Gaia hid him and his nursemaid in the Gardens of Gaia far beneath her crust to shelter him from his father. He grew quickly and learned much from the nymph as well as being instructed by Gaia through whispers and dreams until he knew enough of the world to have an undying curiosity to sample it for himself as within the gardens he never knew how to live without and therefore anthing that was alien to him was his deepest desire. One night when the earth had gone to sleep he approached Melissa with a request for guidence. She agreed that she would help him, knowing that it would inevitably end up in disaster for herself as an earth dweller to go against Gaia's wishes but her love for the child had thwarted her sense of fear. Before they left for the surface Zeus made love to the beautiful maiden experiencing for the first time passion and lust but also welcoming him into adulthood when the predicted prophesy would take place.
They made it to the surface with little trouble but once released from the cave they were instantly under the gaze of the heavens and of course, the Titan Cronus. Rhea sensing her child had returned approached her husband with a peace offering, a toast to the future of the Titans but the contents of the goblet was not wine as was expected but a mixture of mustard and wine which caused the old king to throw up his children in reverse order until before him stood five fully grown Gods. Enraged, he sought the child that had caused the uproar and found Zeus along with Melissa whom he proceeded to turn into an earth worm for her trickery against Olympus. As his siblings fought off the Titans and the Giants on Olympus, he (His siblings joined in later) fought the King and eventually banished him to the depths of Tartarus where he was condemned to rest for eternity. He had not forgotton his partner though, finding the poor creature with the strength he had left he turned her into a bee so she could so lovingly make the honey she used to feed him as a baby. From their union, millions of other honey bees were born and to this day he still harbors a love for honey.
Of course it was now not simply a case of walking into Olympus and claiming the throne. On arrival he was met with distrust, unease and even hatred but in the end they all had to agree that his powers were undeniable and he had saved them from an unenviable life so when their lots were drawn he was crowned as lord of the skies and the ruler of the olympians much to his brother's disgust. Gaia, now well aware of the happenings was outraged to find that the powers of the Gods combined could keep her subdued but not for long, she would pick at her underground tomb until the time was right when she and her beautiful children would rise up and take over but until this point she only ever suceeded breeding monsters to put against Zeus with intent to annoy and threaten him. As the years passed her threats lessened and it is assumed she went back to sleep but her presense is ever looming in the minds of the Gods.
More recently perhaps is his encounters with the likes of Percy Jackson, a demi-god who has managed to irk him on several occasions and caused great discontent on Olympus and not just because of his unwelcome arrival. Being the kind, forgiving God he is he offered this mortal immortality with a chance at serving at his father's side which was shockingly declined in favor of a rule he couldn't refuse - to recognize all demi-gods and to stop the silly oath that the big three should not have more children, proof was there in front of them that it didn't work. Disgruntled he accepted these terms but has since held a childish grudge over the demi-gods believing them to think too highly of themselves and damaging his pride... not that he is getting too involved with them at the moment having closed off Olympus for plans unknown but most believe he is doing it out of damaged pride and stubborness causing a few gods to go behind his back to help the cause. Despite his obvious bitterness for the demi-gods he oftend still finds himself aiding them when they call but how long can he keep quiet from the world?
YOU'RE NOT A JUDGE BUT
IF YOU'RE GONNA JUDGE ME
ROLE-PLAY SAMPLE:
"He's mad that trusts in the tameness of a wolf, a horse's health,
a boy's love, or a whore's oath."
That be the theme of our dearly departed king, the king who would rather have his life ended at the whim of an insane brother rather than to admit he was blind to the true nature of their breed. Somehow, the dark stag so many had cowered before found humor amongst the unsatiable hatred he had felt from the day he had his rights stolen from him by no other than his own kin. It was humerous that he had been made an example of and that he had allowed his bretheren to so shamelessly mock him ruthlessly without him realizing so too had it been positively eye-watering that he, the true Prince, had been allowed to walk freely with such obvious anger towards Pensri and its citizens and believed not to have concocted a final act of mutiny before he left for pastured new. Mutiny? Ah, such a harsh word now. A milenia and still I've been branded a traitor by my own subjects... fear not little birdies, your Lord comes to make amends...
I shall tell you my story, straight from the horses mouth so to speak as I seem to have bad fortune when it comes to 'aquiring' trustworthy subjects. My life started many years before you were even born and many years before any of this peaceful nonsense violated the natural order. I too had a mother and father though my mind is a little hazy to their appearences - they were neccisary for my birth and little more and of course there was my little brother, Kununger Himins who by all means inherited a more noble title than I. We were average to say the least and I had dreams of joining the ranks of the nobles, to become a true king amongst the poverty stricken herd that I had watched dereased in numbers day after day as they were called to fight enemies we knew little about. In my eyes they were fearless creatures with diamond weapons carved into their crainiums, they did not fear death unlike the young and foolish me but like every other young stallion I too knew the reality of my situation would inevitably mean my death on the battlefield. Regrettably, I sought comfort in the only thing I knew was simple in my life - my little brother. Although he was blind he had intelligence and a sense of purity that I could not comprehend but admired nonetheless. He was was less dependant on I than I was of him. At the time I did not realize that the power and influence I had on that young colt would shape my desire for years to come.
At two years old, still far too young but not so easily influenced as my commerades I was drafted to serve my herd on the battlefield. I was far more accomlished in battle than my peers had expected bt to the ranks I was little more than a number for the country with little significance other than to lessen the numbers of the enemies, I was determined to prove them wrong but all it takes is one small misdemeanor to be branded as a failure to arms. With shame, I was to return to my herd and resume my duties as a discredited veteran at two years old... barely away from the teat. Absorbed by my depression Kunu acted tirelessly to comort me but in the end like my dreams he did not succeed as I had found another less than noble thought to occupy my endless nights. I had decided that if I were not seen as any use to my empire as a pawn then I would be as King. From there I shaped my every movement, every thought and every sentence to speak as a Prince would but kept my own desires to myself in fear that any rumor would have me thrown in the mud. It worked for a short while but as my dear brother has mentioned - fate took an unexpected turn. We were ambushed by a horde of horned demons, set on like dogs until every last chaste mare was dirtied, every able stallion was bled and every elder and incapable breathed no more. My thoughts at the time were not for my parents but for my younger brother who I feared had fallen already, by some stroke of luck he was not and I with my ebony coat was able to shield him from the horrors of the night. Of those who survived, only we were not weeping for the lost.
It was almost a week since our herd had been cut when my new 'parents' made their appearence, by chance probably, and we were picked up wth our coats fresh with the scent of death and fastly decomposing flesh. To this day my very own scent reminds me of that glorious day. Shall I continue? Ah, It seems I have lulled you into a false sense of security with my chivalry and obvious love for my family. I apologize as I am about to explain in great detail my exact thoughts after they had fallen. As I said, the King and Queen themselves showed up to do as they do and they found us there. I had not moved from my spot beside my brother not even to eat or relieve myself, too overcome with a feeling that I had not expected of the battlefield - exctacy. Beneath my withering barrel clinging to my fading ebony hue was the reminants of my excitement that no mare before or since has satisfied. I wished at that moment that the King that was staring at me so questionably would tear my wings off, relieve me of my skin and bath me in the glorious red of life. I was drunk with hunger and he could see it even if his mate could not. Mares, though a stallion would hate to admit, always have the final say in most affairs and this was no different. One glimpse at my brothers angelic features had her in a perverted frolic which my brother was then subjected to until his coronation in time.
( The rest will be in third person, this is because I want to follow up on Konu's post with my own little input - similar content but through the eyes of the brother)
"... But father, it is my right! I am the oldest! Have I not proved myself worthy?" The ebony-hued stallion challenged the willowly stallion before him with teeth bared. Not moments before he and his brother had enjoyed careless frolicking through the endless pine wood like the young Princes they were but now it seemed that the man he had once praised as his father had turned into a devil forsaking him for things he had no hold over. Publicly renouncing his right as King due to faults that Vonda believed to be the salvation of a dying race, something he posessed that would make the Pegasi invulnerable to the horned demons and bring power to his kind that no king before him had accomplished since the daw of time. Immortality. So why in the heavens was his father denying them their future? Were the Horned Demons than important to the King that he would rather see them live than to sacrifice the enemy? He was not a King at all! Narrowing his eyes he felt the anger burn within him as he got to his feet.
"My son, it is not simply about who is an who is not worthy. We are sparing you for our future." The king said calmly, his ageless eyes boring holes into the fuming creature watching patiently for any reaction. He was well aware of his duty as king but his duty as a father and his guilt for having his eldest son witness the horrors of the Kingdom held him back this far for fear he would not be forgiven for this heartbreak.
"Future My King? There is no future for cowards!" Vonda growled dangerously with eyes growing darker with desperation. "What would you have us do? Only I have the key to our future, we as Pegasi the kings of the Heavens could rule all! And you would come between us?" He snarled turning to face his bretheren who's heads were bent low in submission. A few curious eyes peered up from the darkness but many remained as neautral as possible. Satisfied that he had at least some support he lifted his head and nickered down to the surrounding equines with a deep and powerful voice.
"My faithful bretheren, it is I, Prince Vonda rightful heir to the throne! Do you hear young King now? He plans to have you live the lives of lowly peasants where I can bless you with the powers of the Gods! Death, disease and famine will no longer hinder you. I can lead you into a future of promise wherelse all this old fool can offer you is poverty and a future with a bastard Prince..." A cruel smile etched at the corners as his lips as more eyes lifted to admire this young entrepeneur. A blinding pain found him motionless on the floor, to wake only as his mother and father welcomed the new Crown Prince onto the throne. He could not meet the traiterous eyes of his brother who had stolen his life and his sanity. Not even as he walked in a daze from the crowd was he aknowledged by the bastard foal. Once outside the territory he found himself to be laughing hysterically, oh ho good it was to be free! Now, onto the smaller matter of murdering his only brother...
