“It seemed like yesterday. Poseidon’s earliest memory of his father – being eaten over fear of a prophecy. It wasn’t one of the god’s favourite memories. If anything, he wanted to repress it but it’s true. Poseidon, like four of his siblings were eaten by their father, Kronos in order to prevent a prophecy coming true and secure Kronos’ throne of power once again. Luckily Kronos underestimated the power of the prophecy and eventually Poseidon was realised from his father’s stomach. As you can imagine, a god willing to do anything in order to gain power had to be stopped and so Poseidon, alongside his other siblings, entered into a ten year war with his father and the Titans. The soon-to-be Olympians fought long and hard defeating the Titans and then the Giants to claim their thrones upon Mount Olympus.

For centuries now, Poseidon alongside his family has helped to rule the universe, moving with western civilisation as it moved from country to country. As this happened, Poseidon changed his identity for example, changing from the loving, paternal, questionably funny figure of the Greeks to this cold, militaristic and warlike figure of the Romans.

No matter what counterpart form he presented himself as, Poseidon/Neptune always retained his position as a god, being able to achieve so much more than any mortal. He could change his appearance in so many different ways whether it is his weight or height or even facial hair in an instant. Over the years, Poseidon has matured though and as a result, knows how to work in a reasonable manner. This isn’t to say that Poseidon is perfect: he can be stubborn or temperamental but he generally prefers to leave those traits to his brother Zeus.

One trait Poseidon has occasionally shared with Zeus over the years has been his love for mortal woman. This hasn’t exactly had a perfect result on his relationship with his wife, Amprhite but what member of the Big Three hasn’t had an affair or two. These affairs have had a major impact on the modern history of Poseidon and the other gods for decades now, starting with the Second World War. Sons of Zeus, Poseidon and Hades participated on both sides, helping to create one of the world’s bloodiest wars. The major event in modern history resulted in the Big Three in making a pact. A pact against anymore offspring so as to never influence contemporary history again.

As it turns out, Poseidon broke the pact within sixty years and along came his favourite son, Percy Jackson – a hero of both Olympus and the first Great Prophecy. Percy’s existence highlighted Poseidon’s position as a warm paternal figure and showed his pride at moments such as the end of the war. But there is a new Great Prophecy and it does not need to take seventy years to be fulfilled like the last, it’s happening now. And it has Poseidon scared out of fear of the rise of Gaea’s children – the giants.”

"Am I or am I not?"

The temple dedicated to Neptune was near empty. Only one teenaged boy devoted his time to being within the confines of his father's honour in mortal form. Today Damian is questioning an age old question of his own personal entity. He had been questioning it for some time but with everything that had gone on over the last number of months, it had to be answered as soon as possible. Damian had to know whether or not he was . . . you know, gay. Personally, the demigod believed that maybe just maybe he would be able to connect with people more easily if he could accept himself on all levels.

A sigh came across his lips. Life had got so complicated ever since the camping weekend and Damian just plummeted into just whole new world of mythology. Mythology is meant to be disputable in fact, not certain information. To think when Damian arrived at Camp Half-Blood, he thought everything was a response to some elaborate trick or evidence of a mental breakdown. He was the son of the God of the Sea, a powerful deity in Greek understanding of how the world works.

That's why he was in the temple now. Having come round to the idea of having ancient Greek heritage and now travelled across from east to west America in a flying ship, Damian needed to speak . . . with his father. Even if it is his dad but not his dad. That was one thing Damian didn't understand. How could the gods have more than one identity with whole new personalities and looks and everything? It didn't matter. The statue in front of the demigod was the closest attempt Damian had to ever meeting Poseidon. Or Neptune. Or whoever his dad was. If Poseidon/Neptune were to appear in the flesh, what would he see in front of him? Would it be a positive impression?
